This scrapbook contains information about the history of the Island, politics, Highway 80 linking Savannah and Tybee Island, the Savannah and Tybee Railroad, the lighthouse, the Martello Tower, the beach and a second Island called Little Tybee.
Tybee Island is a small barrier island located about 16 miles east of Savannah in Chatham County, Georgia. A small town was developed on the Island. According to Georgia Place Names by Kenneth K. Krakow, Ocean City was the small town's name when it was incorporated in 1887. The following year the town became known as Tybee. In 1929, the name was changed to Savannah Beach and later became the City of Tybee. The city limits now include all of Tybee Island. The Lighthouse on Tybee Island is sometimes referred to as the Tybee Light. The Savannah River empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Tybee.
